Recently, St. Joseph’s University ran a contest via Facebook called “How I Met My Hawk Mate” about couples who met while attending St. Joe’s. By sheer coincidence, the winner would be announced on Valentine’s Day. However, a controversy erupted when a lesbian couple attempted to enter the contest and were barred entry because of St. Joe’s (and the Catholic Church’s) feelings towards same-sex marriage.
After hundreds of Facebook posts and some public outrage, St Joe’s said screw it and let the lesbian couple enter the contest, but not before issuing a dumbass statement in which they stated that they they are still against homosexuality and same-sex marriage, but that St. Joe’s was a welcoming place where all were welcome. Translation: they gave us money just like everyone else so we can’t be TOO upset. Plus we want this whole thing to just go away.
Well, I’m happy to report that the lesbian couple, Megan Edwards and Katie MacTurk WON THE “HOW I MET MY HAWK MATE” CONTEST YESTERDAY. We couldn’t be happier. There’s no room for idiotic and narrow-minded bigotry in a 21st Century institution like St. Joe’s. The fact that they even tried to keep this couple from entering this contest was insulting in and of itself. This whole thing makes St. Joe’s look bad, and we’re perfectly okay with that.
