gossamer silicone carpets by heike weber
german artist heike weber has sent designboom images of her most recent ‘kilim’ silicone carpet series, adorning the arp museum
bahnhof rolandseck in remagen. the detailed, diaphanous floor pieces not only gain their title from turkey - the turkish word for carpet is kilim -
but also their aesthetic.
the familiar characteristics of the orient are a distinctive director of the piece, manifesting themselves as patterns and whorls that are
carefully reproduced in stringy white silicone. the artworks symbolically reference weber’s time in turkey,
materializing the culture of the east - the architecture of mosques and palaces and the clamorous bargaining of rugs at the market -
all these elements articulated in the ornate decoration of her art.
