If I dwelt on the historical reality of my people in this country, I would have been a martyr or gone insane or killed somebody. I could never have been an actor or passionately loved art. As a young actor, I adored Shakespeare and walked around with a volume of his work under my arm. One actress saw this and said, ‘Ain’t somebody told that boy that he’s colored?’ But I couldn’t help it; I loved the plays that weren’t written for me. And when I was younger, the best thing we could imagine was to do an all-black ‘Hamlet,’ to start an all-black classical repertory company. Now, I think we can imagine something even better. - Earle Hyman
